Need to get out of Madison? Looking for a quick trip and something new to see? Here are six awesome weekend getaways:
1. Duluth, MN
If you’re looking for a breather and break from the city life, Duluth is a perfect place to sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. There are 23 parks in the city as well as historical districts and waterfront views of Lake Superior. If you’re more of a planner (even if it’s planning to relax…) there is plenty to pick from -- start here.
2. St. Louis, MO
There is something for those of all ages in St. Louis; whether it’s the Gateway Arch, the Anheuser-Busch factory or the local zoo, you will not be bored here. Be sure to get a hotel in the heart of the city for easy access to all of the sights, and don’t miss out on the Old Courthouse and the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis.
3. Door County, WI
For a quiet small town near the water, look no further than Door County. Just three hours north of Madison, this seasonal destination is great for those outdoorsy types that like snowmobiling, snow shoeing, ice fishing, and Peninsula Park hikes. Be sure to get a reservation at Chop for dinner, steak is the specialty.
4. Milwaukee, WI
Milwaukee is best known for it’s breweries and the Brewers, so it’s definitely a fun spot to try out if you’re a beer and/or baseball fan. There’s the Miller Brewing Company, the grand Pabst Mansion, the Lakefront Brewery, and the Milwaukee Brewing Co. just to name a few.
5. Chicago IL
Ah Chicago- Beantown, the Windy City, Chi town, the Second City. There is so much to do and see in Chicago, like walking by the water after checking out the Bean and marveling at all of the skyscrapers downtown. Although it’s a bit chilly in March, you can check it out for St. Patrick’s Day weekend if you want to see the river turn green!
6. Green Bay, WI
Are you a Packers fan? You might become one after visiting Green Bay. You can’t go to Green Bay and not visit Lambeau Field. Folks describe Packers games as a fun and friendly atmosphere, with genuine and kind fans. This is a classic place to visit an NFL football game- just be sure to dress warm!
These are just a few close weekend trips that are perfect for those living in Madison!
